Overview: Kandy, the last capital of the ancient kings of Sri Lanka, is a major city in the Central Province.   • Last Kingdom: Kandy was the last stronghold of the Sinhalese kings before falling to the British in 1815. It served as the capital of the Kandyan Kingdom from the 15th century until the early 19th century.
  • Treaty of 1815: The city was handed over to the British under the Kandyan Convention, marking the end of 2,500 years of royal rule in Sri Lanka.

Key Attractions:

  • Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic (Sri Dalada Maligawa): One of the most sacred Buddhist sites in the world, this temple houses the relic of the tooth of Buddha. The temple complex is beautifully adorned with Kandyan architecture and is a focal point of worship and pilgrimage.
  • Kandy Lake: Also known as Kiri Muhuda or the Sea of Milk, this artificial lake was created by King Sri Wickrama Rajasinghe in 1807. It is a tranquil spot for a leisurely walk and offers picturesque views of the city.
  • Royal Botanical Gardens, Peradeniya: Located just a few kilometers from Kandy, these gardens are known for their extensive collection of orchids, spices, medicinal plants, and palm trees. They cover 147 acres and are a favorite among nature enthusiasts.
  • Bahirawakanda Vihara Buddha Statue: This massive statue of Buddha overlooks the city and offers panoramic views of Kandy and the surrounding hills.
  • Kandy Esala Perahera: Held annually in July or August, this grand procession honors the Sacred Tooth Relic. It features traditional dancers, drummers, fire-eaters, and beautifully decorated elephants, making it one of the most spectacular cultural events in Sri Lanka.

  • Arts and Crafts: Kandy is a center for traditional Sri Lankan arts and crafts, including wood carving, silver and brass work, and weaving.
  • Traditional Dance: The city is famous for its Kandyan dance, a vibrant and rhythmic form of traditional dance that is performed during various ceremonies and festivals.
  • Education: Kandy is home to some of the country's oldest and most prestigious educational institutions, including the University of Peradeniya.

Visiting Kandy:

  • Accessibility: Kandy is approximately 115 km from Colombo and can be reached by road or rail. The scenic train journey from Colombo to Kandy is particularly popular.
  • Accommodation: The city offers a range of accommodation options, from luxury hotels to budget guesthouses.
  • Best Time to Visit: The best time to visit Kandy is during the cooler months from December to April. However, visiting during the Esala Perahera (July/August) offers a unique cultural experience.
