Aitken Spence Hotels Takes Over Management of Sri Lanka's First Ecolodge: Rainforest Ecolodge

Sri Lanka’s premier hospitality chain, Aitken Spence Hotels, has announced its latest endeavor: the management takeover of Rainforest Ecolodge, the country’s first classified ecolodge. This partnership goes beyond a simple management agreement, symbolizing a continuation of a visionary legacy and a deep commitment to sustainable tourism and innovative hospitality.

Rainforest Ecolodge is a groundbreaking tourism project, initiated by industry leaders and spearheaded by the highly respected Prema Cooray. This initiative was part of a USAID-backed study, aimed at positioning Sri Lanka as a global pioneer in eco-friendly hospitality. The lodge exemplifies the balance between sustainable development and environmental preservation, promoting the region’s biodiversity while supporting the local community.

The ecolodge, which holds the prestigious LEED Platinum certification (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design), is a trailblazer in the hospitality sector. It is the first hotel in Sri Lanka, the fourth in Asia, and the fifth globally to receive this esteemed recognition, reflecting its commitment to sustainability. The property features 20 eco-chalets, constructed from reclaimed shipping containers and decks made from repurposed railway sleepers, showcasing an innovative approach to minimizing its environmental footprint without compromising guest comfort.

Located within the serene 500-acre Enselwatte Tea Estate in Deniyaya, adjacent to the Sinharaja Rainforest, Rainforest Ecolodge offers a tranquil, off-grid retreat. Guests can immerse themselves in the pristine surroundings, with guided treks to hidden waterfalls and educational nature trails led by experienced resident naturalists, ensuring an enriching, immersive experience.

Stasshani Jayawardena, Jt. Deputy Chairperson and Managing Director of Aitken Spence Hotel Holdings PLC, expressed her excitement about this new partnership, stating: “Welcoming Rainforest Ecolodge into the Aitken Spence family is a significant milestone in our journey towards sustainable tourism. In line with our commitment to eco-friendly practices, our goal is to integrate the rich biodiversity of this unique destination into the guest experience. We aim to foster a deeper appreciation for nature and reinforce the importance of preserving Sri Lanka’s natural beauty.”

The Rainforest Ecolodge offers an unparalleled eco-tourism experience, emphasizing the conservation of the area’s diverse ecosystem while supporting the local community. With Aitken Spence Hotels at the helm, the ecolodge is set to reach new heights, elevating its status as a premier eco-tourism destination and positioning it as a global model for sustainable hospitality.

Aitken Spence invites nature enthusiasts and eco-conscious travelers to visit the Rainforest Ecolodge and embark on a journey that combines education, adventure, and a deep connection with nature.
